Do You Use Flickr?
When I first started photography back in 2008, everyone said I should join Flickr. At the time it was a super popular photography site. It seemed like everyone was using it, and it was a great source of inspiration for me. I found “Flickr friends” there that I still follow today - and some I’ve even met in person - and I was exposed to a massive amount of visual goodness.
It was sort of the first (at least, to me) photo-centric social media site, and it was awesome. I loved it.
Over time, 500px became more popular (though that has faded, hasn’t it?), Flickr ownership changed hands a couple of times, and of course Instagram’s meteoric rise (along with the rest of social media) drew away a lot of users as well. I have no idea what sort of growth has occurred at Flickr since those days, but I think it’s obvious that it is not as popular as it once was.
And that’s ok. It’s still a great site.
I still use the site and still enjoy it. It’s perfect for organization and search, and I use it for photo scouting quite a bit. But admittedly I don’t use it as much as I once did. I don’t take the time to upload every day like I used to do, and I don’t spend much time there scrolling and interacting, either. None of that is Flickr’s fault - I’m just busy doing other things.
However all the good memories came rushing back the other day when I logged in and was presented with an announcement about My Flickr Year.
This is their once-a-year summary of what you did on the site: uploads, comments, views, faves, and all that. It’s fun to reflect back on those statistics, and it reminded me of a lot of photos I have taken and shared over the years. (I have over 9,000 photos on Flickr, so it’s essentially a complete collection of all my published work.)
My Flickr Year summary is below - just click either image to view in a lightbox.
